The moment you arrive you are made to feel welcome . The staff all greet you with smiles and kindness. Nothing is too much trouble. We felt like a valued customer throughout our entire stay and this was the impression given by EVERYONE with whom we had contact. At breakfast they were most attentive without being intrusive. All customer facing staff spoke excellent English and we did not have any trouble with communications. The lounges were elegant, comfortable, spacious and made for a most relaxing enviroment, complimented by beautiful views of the gardens though the huge picture windows. Throughout the hotel "house plants" and "exquisite flower arrangements" gave the feeling of an enviroment that had been prepared and maintained with love and attention to detail. The room was an oasis within an oasis. The bed was very, very comfortable, and the air conditioning worked faultlessly. We had a view of Funcal Bay from our balcony; a vista to die for, both by day and night. We heard no evidence of other guests and the only sound was that of the ocean once we opened our balcony doors. The room and bathroom were kept spotless by a charming maid who even washed out my wifes travel mug.The wi-fi was excellent and gave speeds of in excess of 100Mbps. The pool was well staffed and provided ample loungers with no problems finding a space to sunbathe. The surrounding gardens were full of well established exotic plants, shrubs and trees which were all in excellent health. The best way to descibe the gardens is " stunningly beautiful in every respect". Eden in Funchal. We had previosly stayed at Portobay Falesia which and it is now clear this hotel provides a consistent high standard throughout its operations. We have travelled extensively throughout Europe , North America, and Asia staying in many 4 and 5 star hotels, so we always compare our experiences. I would have no hesitation recommending this hotel to my friends, or relatives.

The Cliff Bay is a wonderful hotel - we literally couldn't fault it in any way. Loved how the hotel was designed to be so spacious with little 'pockets of space' to relax throughout. Beautiful outlook at breakfast that was welcomly shady (very important in the hot summer months!) and we enjoyed the news bulletins that were prepared by the hotel and available in different languages each morning (great touch!). Fresh flowers in the bedroom (orchid) and bathroom (small hand cut arrangement) which we're appreciated. Attentive staff, always available to help you make the most of your stay. Brilliant breakfast with great choice. Super happy hour with wonderful live music. Classy and high range. The view from our balcony literally took our breath away. This is one hotel we will definitely go back to in the future.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for one night before checking into the sister property next door. It exceeded our expectations, and we honestly wish we had stayed longer! Our room was very spacious with an incredibly comfortable bed and spectacular view. There are several restaurants on site, and we particularly enjoyed our dinner at the Rose Garden, which also happens to be one of the locations for breakfast. The breakfast buffet was amazing, and we loved starting our day with a hearty meal overlooking the gardens. The flowers throughout the interior of the hotel were exceptionally fragrant, and we enjoyed having cocktails and playing cards with the live music from the Cliff Bar. There was ample amount of lounge space, and the pool decks seemed to go on forever. Highly recommend staying here!

This hotel has an amazing outlook with many vantage points. The rooms, service, food and drinks were as expected from this level of hotel. We had two restaurant breakfast options included in our booking. One is more fine dining. What I liked most was the outdoor saltwater pool, right at the foot of the hotel at sea level. But there are many little areas, some more secluded, where you can sun and relax on a day bed. Although the food at the hotel is excellent, we often had dinner in Funchal old town. We used Bolt to get into town (4e) and then a taxi back. (8e). We also had a pleasant surprise. On my wife's Birthday, we found a chocolate cake and a bottle of sparkling wine in our room. It was a wonderful touch.

location was fantastic, with views of the ocean from the room and from the rose garden while eating breakfast. The other restaurants on site were excellent. I did not eat in Funchal at all. It was so convenient, especially with a very active programme of walks on the levadas and catamaran trip. I would not have to think of where to go for a meal. Food was excellent. Especially Avista Mediterranean. I managed to fit a spa between the activities ( excellent as well). You could not leave the hotel basically. The decor was very soothing and the staff not in your face. I will definitely go back. I came back with my batteries charged.
